Behind the Artwork: Fool's Mate

Here is a little "behind-the-scenes" on another of our chess shirts...Fool's Mate.

My original idea for this design had several elements and characters. Our artist wisely trimmed the idea to focus on just the jester...

Other than making the chess pieces a bit larger, the final design is pretty true to the starting sketch...

We had some trouble on the coloring of this design. But after experimenting with a bunch of different combinations, we think we stumbled upon a winner...

There are still a few days left in the month of May to get 15% off this shirt as well as all of our other chess t-shirts...use the coupon code CARNIVAL.

Thanks!!

Behind the Artwork: The Turk

We wanted to take some time to show everyone the love and care that goes into each of our Endgame designs. First up is The Turk...

This was the first sketch we had...

This was good, but needed some work. We decided to take some artistic liberties to change the operator from a human into a gremlin. The Turk also seemed too "alive," so we added more mechanisms around him. Finally, we changed up the horses to make them more active.

At this point, we have something epic. We lost the light bulb on The Turk's head and moved forward with the inking.

Pick some colors and this baby's done!

Don't forget...coupon code CARNIVAL gets you 15% off for the month of May at the main website.

The Turk was one of the greatest hoaxes of all time. Built in 1770, the Chess Playing Automaton, nicknamed The Turk, was said to be a machine that could best any man at chess. While in fact, The Turk was an elaborate mechanical illusion that swindled people on both sides of the Atlantic for nearly 100 years before being destroyed in a warehouse fire in 1854. The Turk's victims included both Napoleon and Benjamin Franklin. Edgar Allen Poe even tried to debunk the machine, but was wrong with several of his assertions.

As most players know, the Fool's Mate represents the fastest possible checkmate, often leaving the victim humiliated for a lifetime. Lucky for you, you'll never be humiliated in this shirt...the detail in this design must be seen to be believed.
